Frugal Friday Tip

Making brown sugar
Since discovering this recipe, I don't buy brown sugar anymore!
Pour white sugar into your food processor. I usually fill mine til it's about half full.
Turn processor on.
While running, slowly drizzle molasses into sugar. I just keep pouring until it's the color I want. I usually go for a light brown sugar. I use less molasses that way!
I usually have to tip my processor a little to get it all mixed well.
When done processing, spoon into Ziploc bags!
1 quart bag of brown sugar to bake with!

  2. Hello Miki! I don't know if you remember me; my name is Vicki, and I used to blog at HomesteadBlogger (my blog was "Streams of Mercy"). It's good to "find" you again! :-)

Thank you for posting how to make brown sugar - I would really like to try this sometime! Is it cheaper to buy the white sugar and the molasses than it is to buy pre-packaged brown sugar? Is it healthier?

    Have a wonderful evening! :-)

    Love in Christ,
    Vicki

  3. Well hello there Vicki! I'm glad that you "found" me too! I really miss the "community" there at Homestead Blogger but it just got too difficult for me to manuver around in there so here I am at Blogger.

I think it is cheaper to make your own because the molasses lasts FOREVER & I can buy a 5 lb. bag of sugar for about $2.50. Plus I always have white sugar on hand & I can make other things with the molasses like molasses cookies. YUM! It is always nice to have a lot of basic ingredients on hand because you can make so many different things! I'm not sure it's healthier or not. If I had to guess, I would say it's probably the same if you are buying plain ol' brown sugar & not organic.
    Thanks for visiting!
    Blessings!

  4. WOW! That is AWESOME! I don't have a food processor, do you think I could do this w/a regular mixer?

I've enjoyed visiting your blog ~ thanks for visiting Marmee's Pantry. Come back often!

    Blessings from Ohio...Kim<><

  5. Kim--
It's funny you ask that because I actually tried making brown sugar with my regular mixer this time & it just didn't work well so I poured everything into my food processor & continued the process. I wish it would have worked with the mixer because that is a whole lot easier to clean than the food processor.
Sorry but thanks for visiting me & leaving comments!
    Blessings!
